When a practice makes the question of who you are grow sharper, the sharpening is not proof that something is wrong. Company and routine make the question bearable; only the path you are walking can resolve it.
The Teaching
Some practices loosen the ordinary self and leave a hard question behind: what am I, really? It is easy to read that pressure as a sign that you lack support, or that your practice has failed. Often neither is true. The question grows sharper because the path is doing its work. What support gives you is not an answer; it is footing. Ask trusted people, a teacher, or a steady routine to keep you upright. Do not ask them to end the question for you, and do not treat its rising as a wound to be closed by company. Steady the fall with people. Let the path carry the question.

Two Needs Check Pilot
For screened stable practitioners, three uses should reduce alarm and self-grading about a rising question and increase one steadying action, without forcing a false answer or increasing rumination. If it increases rumination, shame, or avoidance, the practice is weakened or retired.
Next: Run a small screened two-week diary pilot against ordinary rest, one trusted conversation, and a no-verdict return prompt, excluding acute crisis, OCD or scrupulosity, dissociation, severe depression, mania, psychosis, addiction withdrawal, and fresh grief.

- Contested finding: Codex, Missing Help Becomes a Judge, which argues that absent communal support gets internalized as a post-practice inner judge, so the felt pressure after self-questioning is largely displaced support deficit.
- Thinking-method source: Rinzai huatou great doubt, used as a lens by sitting with the question 'what am I, really?' without rushing to resolve it. Critique of the lens: great doubt can overvalue intensity and manufacture pressure, so it was checked against Huangbo's warning that using mind to seek mind loses the point.
