The Teaching

There is a kind of thinking that feels like progress and is not. You name a finer difference, then a finer one, and each feels true. But ask a plain question of each step: what would I now do, predict, or repair that I could not before? If the answer is nothing, you are not discovering. You are soothing the fear of being wrong by never finishing. The cure is not a better distinction. Take your current best answer, name the one result that would prove it false, go find that result, and stop refining until it returns.

Closing Bet Versus Ordinary Planning

For screened stable knowledge workers, the Closing Bet should increase the rate of committed, testable decisions and reduce repeated re-framing more than ordinary deadline-setting or journaling, without increasing shame or premature closure. If it performs no better, or if it cuts off inquiry that still needed information, the practice is weakened.
