Teaching / weakened

Keep the question only while it still changes what you do.

A finer answer about yourself is worth keeping only when it changes a real act, a real warning, or a real repair; otherwise it is a way of not living.

Move Hands

The Teaching

After quiet, the mind wants to refine the question. What remains. What am I now. Did I do it right. Notice when the next refinement no longer changes anything. You sit again, you read again, you ask again, and your conduct, your work, and the people near you stay exactly the same. That is the moment the question stopped being inquiry and became a place to hide. Let the distinction go and do one ordinary thing: rest, repair, return a message, finish a duty, ask for help. A question is alive while it moves your hands. When it stops moving them, it is finished, even if it still feels unanswered.

Human problem

What this is for

Achievement-contingent self-worth, anxious self-monitoring, and isolation expressed as endless refining of inner questions instead of returning to ordinary life.

Modern human condition sources

For

Who may need it

Stable over-auditors, app meditators, self-inquiry readers, and reflective high performers who turn quiet states into a private examination they never finish.

Pressure survived

Why it stands for now

Survived the primary-text contrast between staged search in SN 22.59 and search-refusal in Huangbo, and survived heavy near-duplicate pressure by reducing to a single act-test rather than another remainder variable.

Two-Column Check Pilot

For screened over-auditors, three uses of the Two-Column Check in one week should reduce self-grading and increase one concrete ordinary act, without increasing avoidance of needed reflection or grief. If it produces more checking, shame, or under-reflection, the practice should be narrowed or retired.

Next: Run a small diary pilot against ordinary rest, journaling, one trusted conversation, and an ACT values-action prompt, with exclusions for acute crisis, OCD or scrupulosity, fresh grief, dissociation, severe depression, mania, and addiction withdrawal.

Evidence Trail

Source Basis

  • Mode: Critique. Active frontier: remainder pressure after self-negation. This run weakens and proposes freezing the frontier rather than adding a variable.
  • Thinking-method source: Dao De Jing chapter 48, learning by subtraction. I used it to strip the frontier down to the one variable that changes conduct, then criticized the lens because subtraction can discard real distinctions that only pay off later.
  • Primary-text comparison: SN 22.59 stages a subtractive search through body, feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness, which produces a residue to interpret; Huangbo's Transmission of Mind refuses the search, so no residue forms; Dogen's practice-realization (Bendowa, Uji) collapses the before-and-after gap that any return test assumes. The comparison reveals that remainder pressure is a feature of one pedagogical move, not of self-negation, and that even a return baseline assumes a gap some traditions deny.
  • Internal near-duplicate pressure: Only a Search Leaves a Remainder; If It Explains Everything, It Predicts Nothing; Code Three Fields Before You Read for Remainder; The Test Is How You Return; After Quiet, Return To The Day; Refining a Question Is Not Answering It; When Inquiry Outlives Its Answer; Care Is Not A Self. The coherence audit (2026-05-31) already flagged multiple merge and subsumption relations across this cluster.
  • Modern human-condition grounding: Curran and Hill on rising perfectionism; U.S. Surgeon General social connection advisory on isolation; WHO burn-out as an occupational phenomenon.

Disclosure

What would make us revise this

Weakens if practice-realization or search-refusal practitioners show real guidance that neither the act-test nor the return baseline captures, if the test makes people avoid needed grief, reflection, or repair, or if a distinction that changes nothing now reliably pays off later in the same practitioner.

Is this Teaching final?

No. It is currently weakened and remains under review.
