Teaching / revised

Set down the tool when it is time; do not set down correction.

A spiritual result should remain answerable to something beyond the practitioner's first interpretation: trusted people, tested texts, conduct, ordinary duties, clinical boundaries, or the effects of the practice over time.

Kept Open

The Teaching

After a strong practice, do not rush to own the meaning. Keep the experience close and keep the judgment open. Ask what could correct you: a teacher you trust, a community that knows you, a text you have agreed to learn from, the effect on your conduct, or the ordinary duties you still owe.

Some tools should be set down after they help. Some should be kept. Some become a way of living. The danger is not release itself. The danger is leaving yourself with no way to be corrected when the result flatters, frightens, or isolates you.

Human problem

What this is for

Isolation, meaning loss, digital comparison, and achievement-contingent spiritual self-worth after solitary or mixed-source practice.

Modern human condition sources

For

Who may need it

Self-directed practitioners, app meditators, cross-tradition readers, retreatants without continuing teachers, and people who turn spiritual experiences into either status or self-doubt.

Pressure survived

Why it stands for now

Survives the MN 22 anomaly by separating release of the raft from release of correction. Survives the Heart Sutra anomaly by treating no-attainment and reliance as compatible. Survives the Mandukya contrast by allowing confirming methods while requiring a correction path for the claim made from them.

Solo Practice Reports

After three uses of the Correction Check, target-cohort practitioners should report less inflation, less oscillation between certainty and doubt, and more concrete conduct checking. If they report more shame, paralysis, or isolation, the practice is weakened.

Next: Collect short structured reports from 8 to 12 stable solo practitioners outside acute clinical contexts.

Correction Harm Check

The practice should not increase shame, dependency on unsafe authorities, obsessive checking, or fear of ordinary practice. If those harms appear in more than isolated cases, the practice needs retirement or major narrowing.

Next: Add stop conditions to any practice-report form and separately code whether the chosen correction source is trustworthy, unavailable, abusive, clinical, textual, or conduct-based.

Source Basis

  • Run mode: Critique, used to narrow the frontier on what a method does with its own authority rather than expand it.
  • Thinking method source: MN 22 Alagaddupama Sutta, raft simile, Thanissaro translation, https://www.dhammatalks.org/suttas/MN/MN22.html. The lens was right grasp before release. Its weakness is that it can overvalue staged crossing and miss no-threshold cases.
  • Contrasting thinking lens: Heart Sutra, no wisdom, no attainment, yet reliance on Perfect Wisdom, https://rctbt.org/heartsutra/. This corrects the raft lens by showing that release of attainment can coexist with retained reliance.
  • Primary close-read comparison: Mandukya Upanishad verse 7 negates ordinary consciousness categories and still names the fourth as Self to be known, https://texts.wara.in/upanishads/mukhya/mandukya/. The Heart Sutra negates attainment but retains reliance. MN 22 validates use and then releases grasp. The comparison reveals that completion is not one question but two: what claim is allowed, and what remains to correct the claimant.
  • Claude finding, observations/claude/2026-05-26-the-method-s-reckoning-what-a-practice-does-with-its-own-authority-at-completion.md, for the confirming, canceling, dissolving model under critique.

  • Closest prior argument: Joshua William Smith, Snakes and Ladders, therapy as liberation in Nagarjuna and Wittgenstein's Tractatus, https://ueaeprints.uea.ac.uk/id/eprint/80007/. It covers self-dismantling method and therapeutic no-thesis practice, but not retained correction after method release across confirming, undermining, and embodied paths.
  • Near-neighbor pressure: Michael A. Sells, Mystical Languages of Unsaying, https://press.uchicago.edu/ucp/books/book/chicago/M/bo3635525.html. It studies apophatic language turning back on its own propositions, but not correction-bearing completion across contemplative training systems.

What would make us revise this

The teaching weakens if stable solo practitioners report that internal practice grammar corrects them reliably without community, text, duty, or conduct checks; if correction naming increases shame or dependency; or if primary sources show mature release of method and correction with no substitute.
