When two paths use the same word, ask whether the word traveled.
An agreement between traditions counts as independent confirmation only when it could not have been borrowed. Where teachers, translators, or shared lineage connect two paths, their likeness may be one voice echoed, not two voices confirming.
The Teaching
When two traditions use the same word, it is tempting to feel that two separate witnesses have reached the same truth. Sometimes they have. Often the word itself traveled: through a teacher, a translation, a shared lineage, or a modern habit of making all paths sound alike. A likeness that came by borrowing is not a second confirmation. It is the first claim, heard twice. Before you let an agreement strengthen your conviction, ask whether the two paths could have learned the words from each other. If they could, hold the likeness gently. If they truly could not, the likeness is worth more, and it will usually be rougher, because each path arrived by its own road.
