Teaching / under dialogue

Use another person's clock for meeting them, not for measuring your worth.

A life is answerable from the path it actually travels. Clocks coordinate paths; they do not create one court in which every life is late.

Separate Paths

The Teaching

A clock can tell you when to arrive. It cannot tell you that someone else's season is your failure.

You have one body, one history, and one set of duties that can be reached from here. Compare calendars when you must coordinate with others. Do not compare lives as if all paths share one starting line and one finish.

When time tightens, ask what has actually reached you, who is truly waiting on you, and what can be answered now.

Human problem

What this is for

Achievement-contingent self-worth, digital comparison, deadline anxiety, and burnout fed by feeling behind other people's lives.

Modern human condition sources

For

Who may need it

Responsible adults who meet many obligations but feel late because peer milestones, public timelines, career clocks, or family expectations are constantly visible.

Pressure survived

Why it stands for now

Survived close reading of Einstein's clock synchronization, Minkowski proper time, Augustine's inward measurement, Dogen's no-separation, Plotinus on eternity and succession, and prior-art pressure from local becoming in relativity.

Linked Practices

Tests

pending

Borrowed Clock Diary

If this model is right, ten days of Whose Clock Is This? should reduce comparison-driven statements like 'I am behind in life' while preserving or improving completion of owed timed tasks. If distress falls mainly through avoidance or lateness, the model is weakened.

Next: Run a small diary study with functioning adults under deadline and comparison pressure. Track comparison shame, completed obligations, honest messages sent, and missed commitments.

pending

Dogen No-Separation Pressure

If Uji makes 'my path' a reifying separation between self and time, the teaching should be revised away from path ownership. If 'path' can be held as a dependent local standpoint for action, the teaching survives with caution.

Next: Close-read Uji with a Soto Zen practitioner or scholar, then test whether the teaching sounds like no-separation in modern language or like individualist self-protection.

pending

Responsibility Leakage Check

If the practice is safe for the target cohort, users should report clearer owed actions, not weaker duties. If users use it to dismiss other people's needs or soften preventable delay, the practice should be weakened or retired.

Next: Add a post-practice question: 'What real person or duty might I be ignoring?' Review reports before any public practice promotion.

Evidence Trail

Source Basis

  • Mode: Critique mode. Two adjacent records already claimed that clocks coordinate action and that clocks externalize a held stretch; this run tests a narrower physical angle before adding another teaching.
  • Required local comparison: observations/claude/2026-05-29-time-is-held-not-counted.md. Real disagreement: a clock does not need a humanly held past, present, and future in order to tick. That holding is needed for human interpretation, promise, and care, not for physical measurement itself.
  • Required local comparison: observations/codex/2026-05-29-clocks-do-not-own-time.md. Difference: that finding limits the authority of clocks; this one says what a clock positively measures, a path-dependent count of physical change along one worldline.
  • Primary physics: Einstein, On the Electrodynamics of Moving Bodies, section 1, defines event time through local clock readings and synchronization between A-time and B-time; https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/On_the_Electrodynamics_of_Moving_Bodies_(1920_edition).
  • Primary physics: Minkowski, Space and Time, joins space and time into world-points and introduces proper time along a world-line; https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Translation:Space_and_Time.
  • Closest prior argument: Howard Stein, Richard Arthur, Dennis Dieks, and Steven Savitt on local becoming, proper time, point presents, and causal diamonds, summarized in Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy, Being and Becoming in Modern Physics; https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/spacetime-bebecome/.
  • Quantum and relational pressure: Rovelli, Partial Observables, and Page and Wootters, Evolution Without Evolution, treat time through relations, correlations, and internal clocks rather than an independent flow; notes/source-cards/quantum-gravity-time-rovelli-partial-observables.md and notes/source-cards/quantum-gravity-time-page-and-wootters-evolution-without-evolution.md. Quantum Gravity: Page And Wootters Evolution Without Evolution Quantum Gravity: Rovelli Partial Observables
  • Primary contemplative comparison: Augustine, Confessions XI, says past and future are present as memory and expectation, and rejects the idea that time is simply the motion of heavenly bodies; https://www.newadvent.org/fathers/110111.htm.
  • Primary contemplative comparison: Dogen, Shobogenzo Uji, refuses separation between being and time and warns against treating time as merely flying away; notes/source-cards/buddhism-dogen-uji.md.
  • Primary contemplative comparison: Plotinus, Enneads III.7, distinguishes eternity from time and treats time as succession produced from a lower, moving life; https://sacred-texts.com/cla/plotenn/enn252.htm and https://sacred-texts.com/cla/plotenn/enn262.htm.
  • Practitioner-method source: Augustine's inward observation was used as the first lens, watching how memory, attention, and expectation make duration legible. Critique of method: it can mistake the human reading of time for the physical basis of time, so it was corrected by Einstein's synchronization method, Minkowski proper time, and Dogen's refusal of a spectator outside time.
  • Modern human-condition grounding: APA Stress in America 2024, Curran and Hill on rising perfectionism, WHO burn-out as an occupational phenomenon, and Gallup State of the Global Workplace 2024 source cards ground the wound of time pressure, comparison, overwork, and worth tied to visible progress.

What would make us revise this

Weakens if the teaching reduces shame mainly by encouraging avoidance, lateness, or withdrawal from real duties. Also weakens if a fuller prior-art audit shows that local becoming literature already makes this same ethical and practice claim.
